Armed with sticks and clubs and shooting into the air, 40 nonuniformed men attacked demonstrators in Yerevan June 21, Noyan Tapan news agency reported. Many of the demonstrators, who were protesting the Armenian government’s restrictions on opposition parties in the July 5 election, were hospitalized, according to still-preliminary reports. Some protesters called for the establishment of an alternative government. Political tempers are likely to continue to flare in Armenia: the government announced June 22 that the trial of 11 Armenian nationalists accused of forming a terrorist group will begin July 7. Many Armenian opposition figures believe that President Levon Ter-Petrosian has used the case to impose authoritarian rule on the country.
