Thenewly elected governor of Sverdlovsk Eduard Rossel told Itar-TassAugust 26 that he would press for more economic independence forhis region but would not resume his push for an independent UralsRepublic. He indicated that he had demanded such a republic earlieronly because the then-operative Russian constitution gave morepower to ethnic republics than to ethnic Russian regions. ButRossel indicated that he was not prepared to back down on otherdemands: he said he would demand more tax money from Moscow, andhe indicated that he had no confidence in Chernomyrdin’s electoralbloc: "They started building their home from the roof. Idon’t think such a bloc has any prospects."
