RUSSIA CHURCH LEADER REJECTS "NORTH AMERICAN" VALUES.

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), Aleksy II, says that "North American standards" of religious freedom are not applicable to Russia. (Itar-Tass, Reuter, August 27) Referring to the law on freedom of conscience approved by the Russian parliament but vetoed by President Boris Yeltsin, Aleksy said proselytizing by "non-traditional" faiths should be completely banned in Russia. The patriarch said Russia has its own traditions and history and that it is the job of Russian legislation to protect them. (Itar-Tass, Reuter, August 27)
