Rebel guerrillas killed eight Russian troops in gunfights and bombings during the twenty-four hours that ended on November 1, an official in the Kadyrov administration told the Associated Press. Two of the eight were shot at an open-air market in the southwestern town of Achkhoi-Martan.

Two officials of the Russian Ministry of Justice’s directorate for Chechnya, together with an employee of Russia’s military headquarters for the northern Caucasus, were kidnapped in the Urus-Martan district southwest of Grozny on the evening of November 3. A spokesman for the Kadyrov administration’s Interior Ministry told the news agency Novosti that about twenty gunmen forcibly stopped the officials’ car.
