RUSSIAN MINERS REFUSE TO WITHDRAW DEMAND FOR YELTSIN RESIGNATION.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 114

Miners from the Pechora, Rostov and Kuzbass coal mining regions picketed the Russian White House–seat of the government in Moscow–over the weekend. They are calling on the government to expedite payment of wage arrears, re-nationalize the coal mines and prevent the closure of unprofitable pits. Lastly, but not least important, they are also calling for the resignation of both President Boris Yeltsin and the cabinet. Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov said he would meet with the miners if they withdrew their political demands, but this they have so far refused to do. (ORT, June 12 and 13)
