Russia’s state-run Ostankino Television screened a 40-minute interview Thursday evening with President Boris Yeltsin, who is running for reelection in Sunday’s presidential elections. The interview, which was conducted by the well-known film director Eldar Ryazanov, is to be broadcast again on Friday. It created a stir in Moscow because of Yeltsin’s reluctance to say what he would do if victory went to his rival, Communist party leader Gennady Zyuganov. Yeltsin said that, a few months ago, he had felt ready to leave office, but that now he no longer felt that way. Moscow viewers read this as a hint that Yeltsin would refuse to leave office if defeated. All Yeltsin would say directly, however, was that a communist victory would plunge Russia into civil war.
