RUSSIANS BUILDING ARMS DELIVERY ROUTE TO AFGHANISTAN?

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 17

Pakistani news sources report that Russian military advisors have returned to Afghanistan for the first time since Soviet troops left the country in 1989. In what was said to be an effort to prop up the beleaguered regime of President Burhannudin Rabbani, ten Russian technicians are reportedly helping to upgrade a Kabul airport while others are involved in the construction of a new road and bridge. The newly constructed route will enable arms convoys to reach Kabul without passing through territory controlled by opponents of the regime. (3)
