Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 78

Speaking on the eve of the Moscow nuclear security summit, a deputy atomic energy minister said April 17 that Russia’s nuclear industry and nuclear energy companies currently employ some one million people and that nuclear production had grown by 1-2 percent in 1994-1995. He also said that companies subordinate to the Atomic Energy Ministry had exported products worth approximately $2 billion in 1995, up from $700 million in 1992. Military production by these companies fell by 30 percent from 1994 to 1995, he added, while non-defense production now comprises more than 90 percent of their overall output. (Interfax, April 17)
