Moscow may sell more Kilo submarines to Iran this year, or may use the cancellation of the sale as a bargaining chip in talks with the United States, Komsomolskaya pravda reported April 29. Earlier, Academy of Sciences vice president Nikolai Laverov said that some 121-123 Russian submarines are being discarded by the navy and that the disposal of the radioactive materials in them poses a serious challenge to the environment, Pravda severa reported March 25. Meanwhile, Podmoskovnye izvestiya noted April 29 that at least some of these submarines might be transformed into scientific research vehicles for work in the Arctic basin.
