Retired Lt. General Aleksandr Lebed and billionaire eye surgeon Svyatoslav Fedorov both submitted the required million signatures yesterday that should qualify them for registration as official candidates in June’s presidential election. (RTR, April 11) The Central Election Commission now has ten days in which to verify the signatures. Meanwhile, Russia’s Supreme Court (the highest court ruling on matters of a nonconstitutional nature) has ruled that the Central Election Commission was at fault in refusing to register the candidacy of billionaire Duma member Vladimir Bryntsalov. (Itar-Tass, April 10) Bryntsalov was earlier denied registration because the Central Election Commission said a third of his signatures were forged.
