WHITE HOUSE REASSURED ON RUSSIAN ELECTION PROSPECTS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 89

The White House yesterday said that it was concerned over remarks made May 5 by Yeltsin aide Alexander Korzhakov, but welcomed "the immediate repudiation of those remarks by President Yeltsin." Korzhakov had called for postponement of Russia’s presidential election. White House spokesman Mike McCurry said that Washington has made clear on a number of occasions–including during the recent nuclear security summit in Moscow–the importance to the U.S. of the June 16 election. He indicated that the Russian government had given direct assurances of its commitment to holding the vote. (Reuter & U.S. Newswire, May 6)
