WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION ISSUES TRAVEL ADVISORY.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 68

Today is World Health Day. The World Health Organization is marking the occasion with a warning about the emergence of new and highly infectious diseases, including a health warning about an epidemic of sexually-transmitted diseases in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. It says 20 percent of such infections in the UK can be traced to Eastern Europe, and 50 percent in Finland to Estonia and St Petersburg. Russian Professor Igor Kon blamed the problem on a breakdown in health care in combined with a sexual revolution among teenagers who, he said, "are even more promiscuous than before." He said a campaign by right-wing activists and the Russian Orthodox Church has prevented the introduction of much needed sex education in Russian schools. (BBC World Service, April 4 and 7)
