YELTSIN TO VETO LAND CODE.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 101

President Boris Yeltsin arrived in the far northern city of Arkhangelsk yesterday, on the latest leg of his election campaign. While there, he said that he will veto the land code adopted by the Communist- dominated Duma May 22 since it outlaws the sale of land. Later today, Yeltsin travels to the Arctic coal-mining region, Vorkuta. Yesterday, miners there were paid wages that had been owing to them since February. The miners had been threatening to go on strike on June 1 to demand their back pay, which could have been a seriously embarrassment for Yeltsin prior to the June 16 election.(Itar-Tass, May 24)
