ZHIRINOVSKY PROPOSES RUSSIAN-ROMANIAN MOVE AGAINST UKRAINE AND MOLDOVA.
Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 201
Interviewed in the mass-circulation Bucharest daily Evenimentul Zilei, Russian ultranationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky called for partitioning the Republic of Moldova between Russia, which would receive Transdniester, and Romania, which would receive the rest. As part of the same scheme, Russia and Romania would pressure Ukraine to return southern Bessarabia and northern Bukovina to Romania. According to Zhirinovsky, such a territorial redistribution could form the basis of a Russian-Romanian alliance in the region. (Flux, October 27)
