Bomb Blasts Hit Algerian Capital

WASHINGTON, DC (4/11/07)–On the eve of the April 11 terrorist attacks in Algiers, The Jamestown Foundation’s publication Terrorism Focus printed an article entitled, "Algeria Tries to Head-off al-Qaeda Resurgence." The article warned of the resurgence of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which is now known as the al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb. Today, on Wednesday, April 11, two bomb blasts ripped through the Algerian capital of Algiers, killing at least 20 people. These were the first bomb attacks in the Algerian capital in years. After the blasts, a spokesman for the al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb took credit for the terrorist incident in a phone call with al-Jazeera.
