Russian prime minister Viktor Chernomyrdin told aSerbian businessman visiting Moscow that the Russian governmentwas opposed to NATO airstrikes in Bosnia, Interfax reported July25. Meanwhile, Russian foreign minister Andrei Kozyrev reiteratedMoscow’s opposition to any use of NATO power in Bosnia followinghis meeting with Serbian president Slbodan Milosevic. At thatsession, Kozyrev also indicated that Moscow wanted all sanctionsagainst Belgrade to be lifted. Meanwhile, the Moscow paper Segodnyaon July 25 noted that there was now a deep split in the five-nationContact Group working on Yugoslavia, with Moscow taking an openlypro-Serb line against the West. It quoted Russian ambassador AleksandrZotov, who is working in the region, as saying that relationsbetween Moscow and Belgrade are now "closer than ever before."
