Georgia’s Ministry for Refugees and Settlement Issues, it was reported on April 15, has begun reregistering Chechen refugees living in the Pankisi Gorge region of northern Georgia. “The reregistration, which ends on April 26, is being financed by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, whose employees are attending the procedure as observers. All information about the refugees will be arranged into a computer database” (RIA Novosti, April 15). The previous census, taken in 2001, revealed that there were 8,000 Chechen refugees in Georgia, of whom almost 7,500 were living in the Pankisi Gorge.
