Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 103

Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, speaking on September 27 at the beginning of a three-day international conference organized by his Gorbachev Foundation, criticized the Russian government for turning the clock back to "wild capitalism" and for failing to take into account the country’s uniqueness. Gorbachev blames the deterioration of life in Russia on "this mistake in policy-making." When asked his opinion of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s remarks advocating bombing strikes in Bosnia, he said that if air strikes in response to ethnic conflicts were such a good idea, she should have tried them in Northern Ireland.
