LITHUANIAN CONSERVATIVES SWEEP LOCAL ELECTIONS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 60

Conclusive though still incomplete returns indicate a triumph for the Fatherland Union/Conservatives in local elections, held on March 23 in all of Lithuania’s 44 districts and 12 cities. FU seems to have won approximately two thirds of all municipal council mandates, and looks set to form district and city governments, singly or with small "rightist" conservative allies, in 46 of the 56 jurisdictions. The victory essentially repeats FU’s performance in the recent parliamentary election. (BNS, March 24-25)
