Three days of discussions between Tajikpresident Imammali Rakhmonov and opposition leader Abdullo Nuri concludedwith an agreement to extend the cease-fire, and for another meeting this week inAlma-Ata, Interfax reported May 21. Despite this progress, the two sidesacknowledged that they remained far apart. Meanwhile, sporadic fightingcontinued along the Tajik-Afghan border despite a UN Security Council statementcalling for a permanent cease-fire in the region.
