A South Korean consortium has abandoned its plans to purchase Fokker, the bankrupt Dutch aircraft company. This leaves a Russian consortium headed by the Yakovlev company as the strongest remaining contender. Yakovlev has been seeking a Russian government guarantee for its offer. Both Fokker and Yakovlev have a strong record in building short and medium-range airliners. (Itar-Tass, January 2)
