SHEVARDNADZE URGES RESUMPTION OF ABKHAZ TALKS.

On August14, three years after the start of the war in Abkhazia, Georgianleader Eduard Shevardnadze urged on Radio Tbilisi a prompt resumptionof negotiations to determine Abkhazia’s political status. Expressingconcern over the Abkhaz side’s delaying tactics, Shevardnadzereaffirmed Tbilisi’s commitment to a political solution of theconflict. But Deputy Prime Minister Tomaz Nadareishvili, who isalso head of Abkhazia’s rump Supreme Soviet based in Tbilisi,told Interfax August 14 that peaceful methods were failing, andthat the refugees, and indeed Georgia as a whole, may resort toother means to regain Abkhazia.
