Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 121

Russian interior minister Anatoly Kulikov told a press conference yesterday that the former mayor of St. Petersburg, Anatoly Sobchak, is being investigated in connection with a criminal case. Kulikov gave no details. (RTR, June 19) Sobchak was a key member of the campaign for democratization that swept the USSR in the late 1980s. He lost his post as mayor of St. Petersburg last spring in a bitterly fought election. At that time, Sobchak vehemently denied reports in the Russian media that he had illicitly acquired an apartment in Paris.
